Naturalizing Soundscapes

Naturalizing Soundscapes by composition with Networks, Dynamics and Complexes Systems

André Luiz Gonçalves de Oliveira1

Abstract:
The concept of soundscape was created to encompass the set of sounds that one can hear in a specific period of time at some place. Schafer, in 70s decade, suggests that the soundscape is a match of the sound events that occur around someone in every-day life. Since it then, the concept has been developed in many ways. This paper will examine the notion from an aesthetic perspective. I argue about the possibility of a set of principles to compose soundscapes that makes possible to experiment what is described as naturalized aesthetic. These principles have been inspired by theories coming from different knowledge areas, including the Cognitive Science, Cognitive Musicology, Dynamic Systems Theory, Contemporary Phenomenology and Ecology. This article provides an overview of the relationship amongst central concepts, that can be used in order to show some fundamental principles to soundscape composition within a naturalized aesthetic. The materials are the concepts rooted in phenomenological approach to perception and cognition. The methods are taken as a set of technical procedures in three different stages of soundscape composition: recording; analysis and signal processing; and place installation. To illustrate tris approach, I present the central ideas of an Installation made in 2010 together with another PhD candidates of the Laboratory of Art and Techno-science - LART /UnB.
